Spoon and gram conversions assume a water-like density of 1 g/mL — fine for most liquid supplements, but powdered products vary widely in density, so weigh powders when accuracy matters. Always follow the product label exactly for medications.
Why dosing math trips people up
Product labels rarely match your tank. A fertilizer dosed at 5 mL per 10 gallons has to be rescaled for a 29-gallon tank, a conditioner label written in capfuls has to be translated to the pump head you actually installed, and half the hobby measures liquids with kitchen teaspoons. The conversions here use the same constants as the AquaLens app: 5 mL per teaspoon, 15 mL per tablespoon, 1 mL per pump, and a 1 g/mL density assumption when moving between volume and weight.
That density assumption is the honest caveat: it holds well for watery liquid supplements, but dry products range from fluffy buffer powders well under 1 g/mL to dense salts well over it. When a powdered product gives a dose by weight, use an inexpensive gram scale instead of spoons. And for medications, the margin between effective and harmful can be small — follow the manufacturer's label over any converter, this one included.
