Agile Chromis Care Guide
Chromis agilis · Saltwater Damselfish

What Agile Chromis look like
The Agile Chromis (Chromis agilis) exhibits a streamlined, laterally compressed body typical of damselfishes, reaching a maximum adult size of approximately 3 inches (7.6 cm) in standard length. Its coloration is predominantly a vibrant blue to greenish hue, with a lighter underbelly, which aids in camouflage among coral reefs. Sexual dimorphism is subtle, with males generally displaying slightly more intense coloration during breeding periods. Notable morphological features include a forked caudal fin that enhances agility and rapid swimming capabilities, as well as a well-defined lateral line system that aids in detecting water movements and potential predators. The dentition is small and conical, adapted for grazing on algae and small zooplankton.
Behavior & temperament
The Agile Chromis is a highly social species, often found in small to medium-sized schools within the upper water column of coral reefs. They exhibit a clear social hierarchy, with dominant individuals displaying more vibrant coloration and engaging in aggressive displays to establish territory. Breeding behavior involves the formation of temporary pairs, where males perform elaborate courtship displays to attract females. Their temperament is generally peaceful, but they can exhibit territorial aggression, particularly during spawning. Agile Chromis are known for their rapid swimming and darting movements, which help them evade predators and navigate through complex reef structures.
Diet & feeding
In the wild, the Agile Chromis primarily feeds on zooplankton and phytoplankton, making it a planktivorous species. In captivity, they thrive on a varied diet that includes high-quality flake foods, frozen or live brine shrimp, and finely chopped mysis shrimp.
Behind the name
The genus name 'Chromis' is derived from the Greek word 'chroma,' meaning 'color,' reflecting the vibrant hues of these fishes. The species name 'agilis' comes from the Latin word for 'agile' or 'nimble,' referring to its swift swimming abilities.
