Cyphastrea Coral Care Guide
Cyphastrea serailia · Saltwater LPS Coral

What Cyphastrea Coral look like
Cyphastrea serailia, commonly known as Cyphastrea Coral, exhibits a robust and encrusting growth form, often forming thick, plate-like structures that can reach a maximum diameter of 30 cm (12 inches). The corallites are typically small and closely spaced, with a distinct morphology characterized by their rounded, shallow shape and prominent, well-defined walls. This species displays minimal sexual dimorphism; however, variations in coloration can occur based on environmental factors, with hues ranging from green to brown and even purple. Defensive adaptations include the presence of potent nematocysts within the corallites, which can deliver a mild sting to potential threats. Unique morphological features include the presence of a prominent coenosteum, which is the skeletal structure that connects the individual polyps, and a distinctive pattern of growth that can create a visually striking appearance in reef aquaria.
Behavior & temperament
Cyphastrea serailia is primarily a sessile organism, exhibiting limited movement through polyp extension and retraction. It engages in a symbiotic relationship with zooxanthellae, utilizing photosynthesis to supplement its energy needs, while also capturing planktonic food particles through its tentacles. This coral species is generally non-aggressive towards neighboring corals but can exhibit territorial behavior when in close proximity to other LPS corals. Polyp extension is most pronounced during the evening hours, when feeding occurs, and the coral can display a degree of responsiveness to water flow and light conditions, adjusting polyp extension accordingly.
Diet & feeding
Cyphastrea serailia is primarily a photosynthetic coral that relies on zooxanthellae for energy, but it also captures small zooplankton and organic particulates from the water column. In captivity, it thrives on a diet supplemented with liquid coral foods and phytoplankton.
Behind the name
The genus name 'Cyphastrea' is derived from the Greek words 'kyphos,' meaning 'hump,' and 'strea,' meaning 'layer' or 'sheet,' referring to its encrusting growth form. The species name 'serailia' is derived from Latin, possibly referencing its habitat or appearance.
