Dome Razor Coral Care Guide
Halomitra pileus · Saltwater LPS Coral

What Dome Razor Coral look like
Halomitra pileus, commonly known as the Dome Razor Coral, exhibits a distinctive morphology characterized by its thick, dome-shaped corallites that can reach a maximum diameter of 20 cm. The coral is composed of robust, tightly packed polyps that are typically pale to bright colors, often exhibiting shades of green, blue, or brown, with a smooth surface texture. The corallites are surrounded by prominent, sharp, and elongated septa, which serve as defensive adaptations against herbivores. Notably, the coral possesses a unique arrangement of its polyps, which are extended during the day for photosynthesis and retracted at night. The species does not exhibit significant sexual dimorphism, but individual polyps can vary in size and color intensity based on environmental conditions and health.
Behavior & temperament
Halomitra pileus is primarily a sessile coral that engages in a symbiotic relationship with zooxanthellae, allowing it to utilize sunlight for energy through photosynthesis. It exhibits a moderate feeding behavior, extending its polyps to capture plankton and organic detritus from the water column, particularly during the night. The coral is generally peaceful and does not exhibit aggressive behaviors towards neighboring corals, although it can engage in competition for space and light. Its stinging potential is relatively low, relying more on its physical structure for defense than on aggressive nematocyst deployment.
Diet & feeding
Halomitra pileus is primarily a photosynthetic coral, relying on its symbiotic zooxanthellae for energy, but it also captures small zooplankton and organic particles from the water column. In captivity, it requires a diet supplemented with liquid coral foods and occasional feedings of zooplankton to thrive.
Behind the name
The genus name 'Halomitra' derives from the Greek words 'halo' meaning 'salt' and 'mitra' meaning 'headband', referring to the coral's shape, while the species name 'pileus' is Latin for 'cap' or 'hat', describing its dome-like appearance.
