What Hydnophora Horn Coral look like
Hydnophora rigida, commonly known as Horn Coral, exhibits a robust and distinctive morphology characterized by its thick, horn-like projections that can reach a maximum diameter of 10 cm (4 inches). The coral's structure is composed of a hard, calcareous skeleton with a rugged surface texture, featuring numerous small, irregularly shaped corallites that house individual polyps. These polyps are typically extended during the night, showcasing their vibrant colors, which can range from green to brown, often with contrasting white or pale edges. Sexual dimorphism is not pronounced in this species; however, the polyps can exhibit variability in size and coloration based on environmental factors. Defensive adaptations include the presence of potent nematocysts within the tentacles, which can deliver a mild sting to deter potential predators. The coral's unique morphology allows it to thrive in various reef environments, providing essential habitat structure.
Behavior & temperament
Hydnophora rigida exhibits a primarily nocturnal feeding behavior, extending its polyps at night to capture plankton and small zooplankton. It engages in a symbiotic relationship with zooxanthellae, which provide it with additional nutrients through photosynthesis during the day. This species is generally considered to be semi-aggressive, often competing for space with neighboring corals through the use of its stinging tentacles. While it can tolerate some crowding, it may exhibit territorial behavior, particularly when competing for light and space. Movement is minimal, as it is a sessile organism, but it can expand and retract its polyps significantly in response to environmental stimuli.
Diet & feeding
Hydnophora rigida is primarily a heterotrophic feeder, capturing plankton and particulate organic matter in the water column. In captivity, it requires a diet supplemented with finely chopped meaty foods and high-quality coral pellets, along with proper lighting to support its symbiotic zooxanthellae.
Behind the name
The genus name 'Hydnophora' is derived from the Greek words 'hydnos' meaning 'truffle' and 'phora' meaning 'to bear', referring to the coral's unique, protruding structures resembling truffles. The species name 'rigida' is Latin for 'rigid' or 'stiff', indicative of its hard skeletal structure.
