Klein's Butterflyfish Care Guide
Chaetodon kleinii · Saltwater Butterflyfish

What Klein's Butterflyfish look like
Klein's Butterflyfish (Chaetodon kleinii) exhibits a distinctive and striking coloration, characterized by a predominantly yellow body adorned with bold black vertical stripes and a prominent black spot near the dorsal fin. Adults can reach a maximum size of approximately 6 inches (15 cm) in length. Sexual dimorphism is subtle, with males typically exhibiting slightly larger dorsal fins compared to females. Defensive adaptations include the ability to blend into the coral reef environment due to their vibrant coloration, which can confuse predators. Unique morphological features include a laterally compressed body, a small mouth adapted for feeding on coral polyps and small invertebrates, and elongated dorsal and anal fins that enhance maneuverability in complex reef structures.
Behavior & temperament
Klein's Butterflyfish is generally a social species, often found in pairs or small groups, exhibiting a hierarchical social structure. They are primarily found at mid to upper water levels, frequently hovering near coral formations. Breeding behavior involves monogamous pair bonding, with courtship displays that include synchronized swimming and fin displays. Their temperament is generally peaceful, but they can exhibit territorial aggression towards conspecifics and other butterflyfish species, especially during breeding periods.
Diet & feeding
In the wild, Klein's Butterflyfish primarily feeds on coral polyps, small invertebrates, and algae, making them obligate corallivores. In captivity, they require a diet rich in marine-based foods, including high-quality frozen or live coral food, as well as small pellets and flakes designed for butterflyfish.
Behind the name
The scientific name 'Chaetodon' derives from the Greek words 'chaite' meaning 'hair' and 'odon' meaning 'tooth', referring to the hair-like teeth of the fish, while 'kleinii' honors the naturalist Wilhelm Klein.
