Montipora Foliosa Care Guide
Montipora foliosa · Saltwater SPS Coral

What Montipora Foliosa look like
Montipora foliosa is a small to medium-sized, encrusting small polyp stony (SPS) coral characterized by its flat, plate-like structure that can extend horizontally across the substrate. The maximum adult size can reach up to 30 cm in diameter, though growth rates can vary significantly based on environmental conditions. This species exhibits minimal sexual dimorphism, as both male and female polyps are morphologically similar. Defensive adaptations include the presence of specialized nematocysts, which can deliver a mild sting to potential predators. Unique morphological features include its distinctive, closely spaced, and rounded corallites that are often arranged in a meandering pattern, giving it a textured appearance. The coloration can vary widely, ranging from vibrant greens and blues to more muted browns and purples, depending on the light conditions and the health of the coral.
Behavior & temperament
Montipora foliosa is typically found in shallow reef environments, where it often forms extensive colonies. It exhibits a relatively peaceful temperament, making it suitable for community reef tanks. This coral is known for its ability to extend its polyps during the day to capture plankton and other particulate matter from the water column, while at night, it retracts its polyps to minimize predation. Montipora foliosa can engage in aggressive behaviors towards neighboring corals through the use of sweeper tentacles, which can extend beyond the typical polyp reach to compete for space and resources. It does not have a significant symbiotic relationship with zooxanthellae, but it does benefit from the photosynthetic products of these algae, which contribute to its overall energy needs.
Diet & feeding
Montipora foliosa is primarily a photosynthetic coral that relies on the symbiotic relationship with zooxanthellae for energy, supplemented by capturing zooplankton and phytoplankton from the water column. In captivity, it thrives on a diet enriched with high-quality coral foods and should be provided with regular feedings of microplankton and other particulate foods to enhance growth and coloration.
Behind the name
The genus name 'Montipora' is derived from the Latin words 'mons' meaning 'mountain' and 'pora' meaning 'pore', referring to the coral's porous structure. The species name 'foliosa' comes from the Latin 'foliosus', meaning 'leafy', which describes its leaf-like growth form.
