What Montipora Stellata look like
Montipora stellata is a small to medium-sized stony coral characterized by its encrusting or plating growth form, often forming extensive colonies. The maximum adult size can reach up to 12 inches in diameter. The corallites are small, typically less than 1 mm in diameter, and are arranged in a distinctive star-like pattern, giving rise to its common name. The coral exhibits a range of colors, including shades of green, brown, and blue, often with a contrasting white or cream-colored edge. Sexual dimorphism is not evident in this species, as both sexes exhibit similar morphological traits. Defensive adaptations include the production of a robust calcium carbonate skeleton and the presence of nematocysts within the polyps, which can deliver a mild sting to deter predators. Unique morphological features include the presence of fine, radial ridges on the surface, which contribute to its overall texture and appearance.
Behavior & temperament
Montipora stellata is typically found in shallow reef environments and exhibits a relatively peaceful temperament, making it suitable for community reef tanks. It is a photosynthetic coral, relying on symbiotic zooxanthellae for energy, and extends its polyps during the day to maximize light capture. Feeding behavior includes capturing planktonic food particles and organic detritus, which supplement its nutritional needs. The coral does not exhibit aggressive territorial behavior towards other corals but can compete for space through overgrowth. It has a moderate growth rate and can expand its territory by encrusting onto adjacent substrates.
Diet & feeding
Montipora stellata is primarily a photosynthetic coral, relying on zooxanthellae for energy, but it also benefits from capturing zooplankton and organic particulates in the water column. In captivity, it requires a well-lit environment and may benefit from occasional feeding of liquid coral foods or plankton supplements.
Behind the name
The genus name 'Montipora' is derived from the Latin 'mons' meaning 'mountain' and 'pora' meaning 'pore', referring to the porous nature of the coral's skeleton. The species name 'stellata' comes from the Latin word for 'starred', alluding to the star-like arrangement of its corallites.
