Sebae Clownfish Care Guide
Amphiprion sebae · Saltwater Clownfish

What Sebae Clownfish look like
Amphiprion sebae, commonly known as the Sebae Clownfish, exhibits a robust and laterally compressed body that can reach a maximum adult size of approximately 4.3 inches (11 cm). This species is characterized by its vibrant orange coloration adorned with three distinct white bands outlined in black, which serve as a form of disruptive coloration against predators. Sexual dimorphism is evident, with females typically being larger than males. Defensive adaptations include the ability to inhabit anemones, which provide both protection and a habitat. Notably, the Sebae Clownfish possesses a unique arrangement of the dorsal fin, which is composed of 10-11 spines and 14-15 soft rays, allowing for agile maneuverability in its reef environment.
Behavior & temperament
Sebae Clownfish are social creatures that exhibit a clear hierarchy within their groups, often forming monogamous pairs. They are primarily found in the anemone-dominated areas of the reef, where they exhibit a symbiotic relationship with host anemones, providing mutual benefits. During breeding, the female will lay eggs on a flat surface near the anemone, which the male will guard and aerate. Their temperament is generally considered to be semi-aggressive, particularly towards other clownfish species, as they defend their territory vigorously against intruders.
Diet & feeding
In the wild, Sebae Clownfish are omnivorous, feeding on zooplankton, algae, and small invertebrates. In captivity, they thrive on a varied diet that includes high-quality pellets, frozen foods, and live foods to ensure optimal health.
Behind the name
The genus name 'Amphiprion' is derived from the Greek words 'amphi' meaning 'on both sides' and 'prion' meaning 'saw', referring to the serrated edge of the dorsal fin. The species name 'sebae' honors the Dutch naturalist, Seba, who contributed to the study of marine life.
