What Sunrise Dottyback look like
The Sunrise Dottyback (Pseudochromis flavivertex) exhibits a striking coloration, characterized by a vibrant yellow to orange body with a distinct blue margin along the dorsal fin. This species can reach a maximum adult size of approximately 3 inches (7.5 cm). Sexual dimorphism is subtle, with males typically displaying more intense coloration and slightly larger dorsal fins compared to females. Defensive adaptations include a robust body and the ability to retreat into crevices within the reef structure when threatened. Unique morphological features include a pronounced lateral line system that aids in detecting movement in the water column, as well as sharp, conical teeth adapted for feeding on small invertebrates.
Behavior & temperament
The Sunrise Dottyback is known for its territorial nature, often establishing dominance over a defined area within the reef. It typically occupies the mid to lower levels of the water column, frequently darting in and out of rock crevices. Breeding behavior involves the male displaying to attract a female, followed by a courtship ritual that includes swimming in circles and displaying vibrant colors. This species is generally considered semi-aggressive, particularly towards other dottybacks and similar-sized fish, but can coexist peacefully with larger, non-aggressive tank mates.
Diet & feeding
In the wild, the Sunrise Dottyback primarily feeds on small zooplankton and invertebrates. In captivity, it requires a varied diet that includes high-quality frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and finely chopped seafood.
Behind the name
The genus name 'Pseudochromis' is derived from the Greek words 'pseudo', meaning false, and 'chroma', meaning color, indicating its resemblance to other colorful fish.
