What Bubble Algae look like

Spherical, glossy dark green bubbles 1–4 cm in diameter, often growing in clusters on live rock. Surface is smooth and slightly translucent. Single-celled organisms — among the largest single cells known.

Behavior & temperament

Nuisance algae in reef tanks. Each bubble is a single cell containing thousands of reproductive spores. Popping a bubble releases spores, causing rapid spread. Must be removed whole without rupturing.

Behind the name

From Latin 'valonia' referring to the genus, and 'ventricosa' meaning swollen or inflated.
