What Asian Upside Down Catfish look like
The Asian Upside Down Catfish (Mystus leucophasis) exhibits a distinctive morphology characterized by a pale silvery-white body that can reach a maximum adult size of approximately 15 inches, though individuals commonly measure between 4 to 6 inches. This species possesses a smooth, scaleless integument adorned with subtle dark markings that provide it with effective camouflage in its natural habitat. Notably, the catfish features elongated barbels that aid in sensory perception, and its body is laterally compressed, allowing for agile movement in aquatic environments. Unlike many other catfish, Mystus leucophasis displays a unique swimming behavior where it often swims inverted, a trait reminiscent of the African upside-down catfish, although it belongs to a different family. Defensive adaptations include a streamlined body shape that facilitates quick escapes from predators, and the absence of armored plates enhances its flexibility in navigating through complex substrates.
Behavior & temperament
Mystus leucophasis is primarily a benthic species, often dwelling near the substrate of rivers and streams where it exhibits a semi-social behavior. While it is not an obligate schooler, it can be found in small groups, particularly during foraging. This catfish is known for its relatively peaceful temperament, although it can exhibit territoriality during breeding periods. The breeding behavior involves egg scattering, where females release eggs over substrate, and males fertilize them externally. The species is generally non-aggressive but may display defensive behaviors when threatened, making it suitable for community tanks with similarly sized and temperamental fish.
Diet & feeding
In the wild, the Asian Upside Down Catfish is an omnivorous feeder, consuming a varied diet that includes detritus, small invertebrates, and plant matter. In captivity, it thrives on a diet that includes high-quality sinking pellets, live or frozen foods such as bloodworms and brine shrimp, as well as occasional vegetable matter to ensure balanced nutrition.
