The body is smooth and scaleless, presenting a greenish-olive coloration that closely resembles the exterior of an avocado, which contributes to its common name. This species possesses large, prominent eyes and a beak-like dentition formed by fused teeth, enabling it to effectively consume its varied diet. Notably, the Avocado Pufferfish has the ability to inflate its body as a defensive adaptation against predators, a trait common among pufferfish.
