Azure Damselfish Care Guide
Chrysiptera hemicyanea · Saltwater Damselfish

What Azure Damselfish look like
Chrysiptera hemicyanea, commonly known as the Azure Damselfish, exhibits a vibrant coloration characterized by a striking blue body with a yellow-orange hue on the dorsal fin and a faint yellow patch on the caudal fin. This species can reach a maximum adult size of approximately 3 inches (7.5 cm). Sexual dimorphism is subtle, with males typically displaying slightly more intense coloration and larger dorsal fins compared to females. Defensive adaptations include a robust, laterally compressed body that allows for agile maneuvering among reef structures, and a set of sharp, pointed spines on the dorsal fin that can deter potential predators. The species also possesses a lateral line system that aids in detecting water movements and vibrations in its environment.
Behavior & temperament
The Azure Damselfish is known for its territorial nature, often establishing dominance over a specific area within the reef. It typically occupies the mid-water column, frequently darting in and out of crevices and coral structures. Breeding behavior involves the male establishing a territory and performing courtship displays to attract females, which includes elaborate swimming patterns and color displays. This species is generally considered semi-aggressive, particularly towards intruders or other damselfish, and will defend its territory vigorously against perceived threats.
Diet & feeding
In the wild, the Azure Damselfish primarily feeds on zooplankton and algae, exhibiting omnivorous grazing behavior. In captivity, it requires a varied diet that includes high-quality flake food, frozen or live brine shrimp, and algae-based foods to maintain optimal health.
Behind the name
The genus name 'Chrysiptera' is derived from the Greek words 'chrysos' meaning 'gold' and 'pteron' meaning 'fin', while the species name 'hemicyanea' combines 'hemi' meaning 'half' and 'cyanea' meaning 'blue', referring to its coloration.
