What Brunei Beauty look like
Betta macrostoma, commonly known as the Brunei Beauty, exhibits a large, elongated, and robust body, reaching a maximum adult size of approximately 5 inches (12.7 cm). This species displays pronounced sexual dimorphism; males are characterized by their vibrant brick-red coloration adorned with striking black and red striped bars on the caudal fin, while females are generally less colorful, exhibiting a more subdued palette. The species possesses a notably wide, frog-like mouth adapted for mouthbrooding, which is a unique morphological feature among bettas. Additionally, the body is laterally compressed, and the dorsal fin is elongated, contributing to its overall aesthetic appeal. Defensive adaptations include the ability to display vibrant colors to deter predators and a strong, muscular body that allows for agile movement in its natural habitat.
Behavior & temperament
The Brunei Beauty is primarily a solitary species, although it may exhibit social interactions during breeding. It inhabits the benthic and mid-water regions of its native freshwater environments, often found in slow-moving streams and swamps. Breeding behavior is characterized by mouthbrooding, where the male incubates the fertilized eggs in his mouth until they hatch. This species exhibits a moderate level of aggression, particularly during the breeding season, when males may display territorial behaviors towards rivals. Outside of breeding, they are relatively peaceful but can become aggressive if provoked or confined in inadequate space.
Diet & feeding
In the wild, Betta macrostoma is a carnivore, primarily feeding on small invertebrates and zooplankton. In captivity, it requires a diet rich in high-quality protein sources, such as live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms to maintain optimal health.
