What Black Neon Tetra look like
The Black Neon Tetra (Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi) exhibits a laterally compressed, fusiform body shape, reaching a maximum adult size of approximately 1.5 inches (3.8 cm). This species displays sexual dimorphism, with males typically being more slender and exhibiting brighter coloration compared to the rounder, more subdued females. A distinctive feature of the Black Neon Tetra is its striking iridescent blue lateral stripe, which runs from the snout to the base of the caudal fin, complemented by a contrasting black stripe below. The fins are generally transparent with a slight hint of yellow, and the species possesses an adipose fin, which is characteristic of many characids. Defensive adaptations include schooling behavior, which reduces individual predation risk, and the ability to quickly dart away from threats. The dentition is small and conical, suitable for their omnivorous diet.
Behavior & temperament
Black Neon Tetras are social fish that thrive in groups, typically forming schools of six or more individuals in the wild. They inhabit the mid to upper water column in their native Brazilian streams and are known for their peaceful temperament, making them ideal for community tanks. During breeding, they exhibit egg-scattering behavior, where females release eggs among plants, and males fertilize them externally. Their social hierarchy is relatively flat, with no strict dominance, although larger individuals may occasionally assert themselves. They are generally non-aggressive but may display territoriality during breeding periods.
Diet & feeding
In the wild, Black Neon Tetras are omnivorous, feeding on small invertebrates, plant matter, and detritus. In captivity, they require a varied diet that includes high-quality flake food, micro-pellets, and occasional live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia to ensure optimal health and coloration.
