What Elegant Corydoras look like
Corydoras elegans, commonly known as the Elegant Corydoras, exhibits a medium-sized, laterally compressed body that typically reaches a maximum adult size of approximately 2 inches (5 cm). The species is characterized by a pale silvery body adorned with a prominent, bold dark stripe extending from the head to the caudal fin, while the lower body remains a clean silvery-white. Notably, the head may display some dark blotching, contributing to its distinctive appearance. The clear demarcation between the dark upper body and the bright white lower body is a hallmark of this species. The dorsal fin is also marked with dark pigmentation, enhancing its visual appeal. Sexual dimorphism is subtle, with females generally being slightly larger and rounder in the abdomen when compared to males, particularly during breeding periods. Defensive adaptations include a bony armor of plates along the body, typical of the family Callichthyidae, which provides protection against predation. Additionally, the presence of an adipose fin and well-developed barbels aids in foraging and navigation in its natural habitat.
Behavior & temperament
Corydoras elegans is a social species that exhibits a tendency to form loose schools, particularly in the presence of conspecifics. It primarily occupies the benthic zone of freshwater environments, foraging along the substrate for food. This species is known for its peaceful temperament, making it an ideal candidate for community aquariums. Breeding behavior involves egg scattering, where females release adhesive eggs that adhere to surfaces, often in sheltered areas. During breeding, males may display increased activity and engage in courtship behaviors, such as chasing and nudging the female. Overall, the Elegant Corydoras is characterized by a non-aggressive disposition, allowing it to coexist harmoniously with a variety of tank mates.

In the wild, Corydoras elegans is an omnivorous feeder, consuming a varied diet that includes small invertebrates, detritus, and plant matter. In captivity, it thrives on a balanced diet that includes high-quality sinking pellets, frozen or live foods such as bloodworms and brine shrimp, as well as occasional vegetable matter to ensure optimal health.
