Crystal Red Shrimp Care Guide
Caridina cantonensis var. Crystal Red · Freshwater Invert

What Crystal Red Shrimp look like
The Crystal Red Shrimp (Caridina cantonensis var. Crystal Red) is a diminutive freshwater invertebrate, typically reaching a maximum adult size of approximately 1-1.2 inches (2.5-3 cm). This species exhibits sexual dimorphism, with females generally being larger and more robust than males. The striking appearance features a distinctive pattern of bold alternating bands of opaque snow-white and vibrant crimson red across the body and tail, with higher-grade specimens (SSS, SS) displaying more extensive white coverage and thicker bands. The carapace is adorned with a unique red and white pattern, while the legs and antennae are translucent to white, contributing to its overall aesthetic appeal. The fan-shaped tail, or uropods, also showcases the characteristic red-white banding. The rostrum is short and pointed, enhancing its streamlined morphology, which is advantageous for navigating its aquatic environment. Defensive adaptations include its small size and coloration, which may provide camouflage among aquatic vegetation.
Behavior & temperament
Crystal Red Shrimp are primarily social creatures, often found in small groups, although they do not form strict hierarchies. They inhabit the benthic zone of freshwater environments, typically dwelling among leaf litter and substrate where they can forage for food. Their breeding behavior is characterized by being egg scatterers, with females carrying fertilized eggs under their pleopods until they hatch. This species exhibits a generally peaceful temperament, although they can display territorial behaviors when competing for food or hiding spots, particularly in smaller aquaria.
Diet & feeding
In the wild, Crystal Red Shrimp are omnivorous scavengers, feeding on biofilm, detritus, and decaying plant matter. In captivity, they require a varied diet that includes high-quality shrimp pellets, blanched vegetables, and occasional protein sources such as crushed fish flakes or specialized shrimp food to ensure optimal health and coloration.
