Duplicate Corydoras Care Guide
Corydoras duplicareus · Freshwater Fish

What Duplicate Corydoras look like
Corydoras duplicareus, commonly known as the Duplicate Corydoras, is a diminutive armored catfish characterized by its maximum adult size of approximately 2 inches (5 cm). This species exhibits a laterally compressed body with a pale, almost translucent coloration, adorned with a striking dark band that extends across the eyes, providing a bold contrast. A distinctive feature is the prominent orange-gold patch located on the nape and dorsal region, which serves as a key identifying trait, particularly when distinguishing it from the closely related C. adolfoi. The body is covered in bony plates typical of the Callichthyidae family, providing protection from predators. Additionally, the species possesses well-developed barbels that aid in foraging along the substrate, and its fin structure includes a rounded dorsal fin and a forked caudal fin, enhancing its agility in the water column.
Behavior & temperament
In terms of behavior, Corydoras duplicareus is a social fish that thrives in groups, exhibiting a tendency to form loose schools within its natural habitat. This species primarily occupies the benthic zone of freshwater environments, where it forages among the substrate for food. During breeding, it engages in egg scattering behavior, where females release eggs onto surfaces while males fertilize them in close proximity. The temperament of Duplicate Corydoras is generally peaceful, making them suitable for community tanks, although they may exhibit mild territoriality during breeding periods.
Diet & feeding
In the wild, Corydoras duplicareus is an omnivore, feeding on a varied diet that includes detritus, small invertebrates, and plant matter. In captivity, they require a balanced diet consisting of high-quality sinking pellets, supplemented with occasional live or frozen foods such as daphnia and bloodworms to ensure optimal health.
Behind the name
The genus name 'Corydoras' is derived from the Greek 'korydalis' meaning 'helmet', referring to the bony plates that cover the fish's body, while 'duplicareus' is derived from the Latin 'duplicare', meaning 'to double', likely referencing its resemblance to other species within the genus.
