What Dwarf Pencilfish look like
Nannostomus marginatus, commonly known as the Dwarf Pencilfish, exhibits a diminutive, elongated, and laterally compressed body, reaching a maximum adult size of approximately 1.5 inches (3.8 cm). The species is characterized by its striking coloration, featuring three bold, dark horizontal stripes that traverse its golden-cream body, with vibrant red patches interspersed between the stripes and adorning the fins. The dorsal fin is elongated and slightly pointed, while the anal fin is also elongated, contributing to its streamlined appearance. Sexual dimorphism is subtle; males tend to be slightly smaller and more vibrantly colored than females, particularly during the breeding season. Defensive adaptations include its small size and schooling behavior, which helps to reduce predation risk. Unique morphological features include a well-developed lateral line system, which aids in detecting vibrations in the water, and a small mouth with fine dentition adapted for grazing on small food particles.

In the wild, they inhabit slow-moving waters with dense vegetation, where they can find cover and forage for food. Breeding behavior involves egg scattering, with females laying adhesive eggs among plants, which hatch within a few days. Their social hierarchy is relatively flat, with no strict dominance among individuals, although males may display competitive behaviors during mating rituals.
