Ethereal Danio Care Guide
Danionella cerebrum · Freshwater Fish

What Ethereal Danio look like
The Ethereal Danio (Danionella cerebrum) is a diminutive species, reaching a maximum adult size of approximately 0.3 inches (7.6 mm), making it one of the smallest vertebrates known. Its body is laterally compressed and almost entirely transparent, allowing for the visibility of internal structures such as the brain and skeletal elements, which are unique morphological features that contribute to its ethereal appearance. The fish lacks prominent pigmentation, and its fins are delicate and almost filamentous, blending seamlessly with its body. The absence of significant defensive adaptations, such as spines or robust scales, is compensated by its size and transparency, which serve as effective camouflage in its natural habitat. The lateral line system is minimally developed, reflecting its small size and the ecological niche it occupies.
Behavior & temperament
Ethereal Danios are typically found in small shoals, exhibiting social behaviors that suggest a loose hierarchical structure, though they are not obligate schoolers. They inhabit the upper layers of the water column, often dwelling in shallow, densely vegetated areas of their native Asian waters. Their breeding behavior is characterized as an egg scatterer, where females release eggs over vegetation, and males fertilize them externally. Ethereal Danios are generally peaceful and exhibit low aggression levels, making them suitable for community tanks with similarly sized species.
Diet & feeding
In the wild, Ethereal Danios are omnivorous, feeding on small zooplankton, algae, and detritus. In captivity, they require a varied diet that includes finely crushed flakes, micro-pellets, and live or frozen foods such as micro-worms and infusoria to meet their nutritional needs.
