Eurasian Minnow Care Guide
Phoxinus phoxinus · Freshwater Fish

What Eurasian Minnow look like
The Eurasian Minnow (Phoxinus phoxinus) exhibits a slender, fusiform body shape, typically measuring between 2 to 3 inches in length, with a maximum adult size reaching up to 5 inches. The species displays sexual dimorphism, particularly during breeding season when males develop a striking red belly and enhanced dark pigmentation, contrasting with the otherwise plain silver-green coloration of both sexes. The body is laterally compressed, facilitating agile movement in flowing waters. Notable morphological features include a single dorsal fin positioned centrally on the back, a forked caudal fin, and a series of small, conical teeth adapted for an omnivorous diet. The presence of a lateral line system enhances sensory perception in their aquatic environment, while their streamlined shape aids in swift navigation through their habitat. Defensive adaptations include schooling behavior, which provides safety in numbers against potential predators.
Behavior & temperament
Eurasian Minnows are typically found in schools, exhibiting a strong social hierarchy where individuals maintain a pecking order within the group. They inhabit the upper layers of freshwater streams and rivers, favoring areas with moderate to fast currents. Their breeding behavior is characterized as an egg scatterer, with females releasing eggs among vegetation or substrate, which are then fertilized by males. During the breeding season, males become more territorial and exhibit increased aggression towards rivals. Generally, they are considered peaceful and non-aggressive towards other species, making them suitable for community tanks, provided they are kept in groups to reduce stress and promote natural behaviors.
Diet & feeding
In the wild, the Eurasian Minnow is an omnivore, feeding on a varied diet that includes small invertebrates, algae, and detritus. In captivity, they thrive on a balanced diet of high-quality flake food, supplemented with live or frozen foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp, and vegetable matter to ensure optimal health.
