What Guapore Corydoras look like
Corydoras guapore, commonly known as the Guapore Corydoras, is a diminutive armored catfish characterized by its laterally compressed, fusiform body, reaching a maximum adult size of approximately 2 inches (5 cm). The species exhibits subtle beauty with a pale body adorned with delicate dark markings, which serve as camouflage among the substrate of its native habitat in the Guaporé River basin. Sexual dimorphism is not pronounced, although males may display slightly more elongated pectoral fins. This species possesses the typical morphological features of the Callichthyidae family, including a bony armor plating, well-developed barbels for sensory perception, and a flattened ventral surface adapted for benthic feeding. Additionally, the presence of an adipose fin and a lateral line system enhances its ability to navigate and detect vibrations in the water column, contributing to its survival in the wild.
Behavior & temperament
The Guapore Corydoras is a social species that thrives in small groups, exhibiting a tendency to form loose aggregations rather than strict schooling behavior. It primarily inhabits the benthic zone of freshwater environments, where it forages among leaf litter and substrate. Breeding behavior involves egg scattering, with females depositing adhesive eggs on surfaces, which males subsequently fertilize. This species is generally peaceful and exhibits a calm temperament, making it suitable for community tanks. However, it may display territoriality during breeding periods, and it is best kept with similarly sized, non-aggressive tank mates to minimize stress and aggression.
Diet & feeding
In the wild, the Guapore Corydoras is an omnivore, feeding on a varied diet that includes detritus, small invertebrates, and plant matter. In captivity, it requires a balanced diet consisting of high-quality sinking pellets, frozen or live foods such as bloodworms and brine shrimp, along with occasional vegetable matter to ensure optimal health.
Behind the name
Corydoras (from Greek 'korydallos', meaning 'helmeted') refers to the armored nature of the fish; guapore (derived from the Guaporé River, its native habitat) designates its geographical origin.
