What Imitator Corydoras look like
Corydoras imitator, commonly known as the Imitator Corydoras, is a diminutive armored catfish that typically reaches a maximum adult size of approximately 2 inches (5 cm). This species exhibits a pale body coloration adorned with a distinctive dark eye band and an orange-gold nape marking, which serve as key identifiers that closely mimic the appearance of C. adolfoi and C. duplicareus. The body is laterally compressed and features a robust, bony armor characteristic of the Callichthyidae family, providing effective defense against predation. Unique morphological features include the presence of an adipose fin and a well-developed lateral line system, which aids in detecting vibrations in the water. Sexual dimorphism is subtle; males are generally smaller and more slender than females, particularly during the breeding season when females exhibit a more rounded abdomen due to egg development.
Behavior & temperament
Imitator Corydoras are typically found in small, social groups, exhibiting a behavior characteristic of obligate schoolers. They inhabit the benthic zone of their freshwater environments, often dwelling among leaf litter and substrate where they forage for food. Their breeding behavior is notable as they are egg scatterers, laying adhesive eggs on flat surfaces or vegetation. In terms of temperament, these fish are generally peaceful and exhibit low aggression levels, making them suitable for community tanks. They thrive in well-structured environments that mimic their natural habitat, which contributes to their overall well-being and social interactions.
Diet & feeding
In the wild, Imitator Corydoras are omnivorous, primarily feeding on detritus, small invertebrates, and plant matter. In captivity, they require a varied diet that includes high-quality sinking pellets, frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia, as well as blanched vegetables to ensure a balanced nutritional intake.
Behind the name
Corydoras (from Greek 'korydallos', meaning 'helmeted') refers to the armored nature of these catfish; 'imitator' signifies its mimicry of other Corydoras species, particularly C. adolfoi.
