Lake Furnusu Rainbowfish Care Guide
Melanotaenia mairasi · Freshwater Fish

What Lake Furnusu Rainbowfish look like
The Lake Furnusu Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia mairasi) exhibits a medium-sized, laterally compressed body, reaching a maximum adult size of approximately 10-20 cm. Males are particularly striking, displaying vivid iridescent coloration with hues of blue and gold, which intensify during breeding periods, while females are generally less colorful and more subdued in their appearance. This species possesses two distinct dorsal fins, contributing to its streamlined profile, and features a well-defined lateral line that aids in hydrodynamic sensing. The dentition is small and conical, adapted for a varied diet, and the presence of an adipose fin enhances stability during swimming. Defensive adaptations include rapid swimming capabilities and schooling behavior, which provide safety in numbers against potential predators.
Behavior & temperament
Lake Furnusu Rainbowfish are primarily social and exhibit a strong tendency to form schools, particularly in the presence of environmental structure such as aquatic vegetation. They inhabit the mid to upper water column, often found in the pelagic zone of their native lake. Breeding behavior involves egg scattering, where females release eggs among vegetation, providing some protection for the developing embryos. These fish are generally peaceful but can exhibit territoriality during breeding, especially males vying for the attention of females. Their temperament is characterized as moderately active, with occasional bursts of aggression during mating displays.
Diet & feeding
In the wild, Lake Furnusu Rainbowfish are omnivorous, feeding on a diet that includes small invertebrates, algae, and detritus. In captivity, they thrive on a varied diet that includes high-quality flake food, frozen or live foods such as daphnia and brine shrimp, and should also receive vegetable matter to ensure optimal health.
