Lake Tebera Rainbowfish Care Guide
Melanotaenia herbertaxelrodi · Freshwater Fish

What Lake Tebera Rainbowfish look like
The Lake Tebera Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia herbertaxelrodi) exhibits a laterally compressed, fusiform body shape, reaching a maximum adult size of approximately 4-5 inches (10-12.5 cm). Males are particularly striking, displaying vivid golden-yellow coloration that intensifies with dominance, while females are generally less colorful, often exhibiting a more subdued hue. The species possesses two dorsal fins, which are characteristic of the genus, contributing to its streamlined appearance. Notably, the fish features a well-defined lateral line that aids in hydrodynamic sensing, and its dentition is adapted for an omnivorous diet, with small, conical teeth suited for grazing on algae and capturing small invertebrates. Defensive adaptations include a rapid swimming ability and the capacity to blend into their aquatic environment, particularly among vegetation.
Behavior & temperament
Lake Tebera Rainbowfish are social creatures, often found in small to medium-sized schools, which provide safety in numbers. They inhabit the mid to upper levels of the water column, exhibiting pelagic behavior. Breeding occurs in a manner typical of many rainbowfish, where they are egg scatterers, releasing fertilized eggs among aquatic vegetation. Their temperament is generally peaceful, although males may display territorial behavior during breeding seasons, particularly when competing for the attention of females. This species thrives in a dynamic social hierarchy, with dominant males establishing territories within their groups.
Diet & feeding
In the wild, Lake Tebera Rainbowfish are omnivorous, consuming a varied diet that includes algae, small invertebrates, and detritus. In captivity, they require a balanced diet consisting of high-quality flake food, supplemented with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia to ensure optimal health and coloration.
