Marimo Moss Ball Care Guide
Aegagropila linnaei · Freshwater Plant

What Marimo Moss Ball look like
Marimo is a growth form of Aegagropila linnaei in which fine algae filaments form a compact spherical colony. Aquarium specimens grow extremely slowly and may flatten if left in one position for long periods.
Behavior & temperament
Marimo is peaceful with livestock and useful as a low-maintenance accent rather than a nutrient-control solution. It prefers cooler water and should be protected from intense light, debris buildup, and algae-eating animals that pick it apart.
Diet & feeding
Marimo are photosynthetic filamentous green algae balls. Provide low to moderate light, clean cool water, and gentle rolling or occasional turning so all sides receive light. They do not need root tabs or planting substrate.
Behind the name
Marimo combines Japanese words for ball and aquatic plant; linnaei honors Carl Linnaeus.
