Nijssens Corydoras Care Guide
Corydoras nijsseni · Freshwater Fish

What Nijssens Corydoras look like
Corydoras nijsseni, commonly known as Nijssens Corydoras, is a small armored catfish characterized by its laterally compressed, fusiform body shape, typically reaching a maximum adult size of approximately 2 inches (5 cm). The species exhibits sexual dimorphism, with males generally being slightly smaller and more slender than females, especially during the breeding season when females become more robust due to egg development. The body is predominantly pale, adorned with bold dark markings that manifest as large spots or saddle patterns, providing a striking contrast. This species possesses the characteristic bony armor of the Callichthyidae family, with a series of bony plates covering the body, and features prominent barbels that aid in foraging along the substrate. Unique to this species is the presence of an adipose fin, which is a distinguishing feature among many Corydoras species, and a well-developed lateral line system that enhances its sensory perception in murky waters.
Behavior & temperament
Nijssens Corydoras are social fish that thrive in groups, exhibiting a tendency to form loose schools within their natural habitat. They primarily inhabit the benthic zone of freshwater environments in South America, where they forage for food among the substrate. Their behavior is generally peaceful, making them suitable for community tanks, although they can display slight territoriality during breeding periods. Breeding behavior involves egg scattering, where females release eggs onto flat surfaces, often in the presence of males that fertilize them shortly after. The species is known for its inquisitive nature, often exploring its environment and interacting with tank mates, but it remains non-aggressive and prefers to avoid confrontation.
Diet & feeding
In the wild, Nijssens Corydoras are omnivorous, feeding on a varied diet that includes detritus, small invertebrates, and plant matter. In captivity, they require a balanced diet consisting of high-quality sinking pellets, frozen or live foods such as bloodworms and brine shrimp, along with occasional vegetable matter to ensure optimal health.
Behind the name
Corydoras (from Greek 'korydallos', meaning 'helmeted') refers to the armored nature of the fish, while nijsseni honors the ichthyologist Han Nijssen, who contributed to the study of this species.
