What Rainbow Goby look like

Stiphodon ornatus is a small stream goby with fused pelvic fins forming a suction disc for clinging to rocks. Males display much brighter iridescent colors than females, while females are usually more subdued with banded or mottled markings. The body is slim, bottom-oriented, and adapted for life in current.

Behavior & temperament

Rainbow Gobies are peaceful but specialized hillstream fish. They need clean oxygen-rich water, steady current, smooth algae-covered stones, and stable mature biofilm. Males may display to each other but serious damage is uncommon in a well-structured tank. They are poor choices for new sterile aquariums because they can slowly starve without grazing surfaces.

Diet & feeding

Rainbow Gobies graze aufwuchs, biofilm, diatoms, and soft algae from mature stones and hardscape. A mature aquarium is important. Supplement with spirulina powder, algae-based gel foods, fine sinking herbivore foods, and occasional tiny frozen foods, but do not rely on protein-heavy foods alone.

Behind the name

Stiphodon refers to clinging or crowded teeth; ornatus means ornate, matching the male's colorful pattern.
