Red Skirt Betta Care Guide
Betta falx · Freshwater Fish

What Red Skirt Betta look like
Betta falx exhibits a slender, laterally compressed body that typically reaches a maximum adult size of approximately 2 inches (5 cm). Males are particularly distinguished by their elongated, flowing red anal fin, which is the most prominent feature contributing to their common name, 'Red Skirt Betta.' The body coloration is generally a muted brownish hue, adorned with iridescent blue-green markings on the gill covers, which serve as a visual signal during mating displays. Sexual dimorphism is evident, with males showcasing more vibrant coloration and longer fins compared to females, which possess shorter, more rounded fins. Defensive adaptations include the ability to flare their fins and display aggressive postures to deter potential threats. The species lacks a pronounced lateral line but possesses well-developed dentition suited for a carnivorous diet, with small, sharp teeth adapted for grasping prey.
Behavior & temperament
Inhabiting the shallow, densely vegetated waters of Sumatra, Betta falx is primarily a solitary species, although it may exhibit social interactions during breeding periods. These fish are generally found in the benthic zone, where they utilize the cover of aquatic plants for both foraging and protection. Breeding behavior involves males constructing bubble nests and displaying courtship rituals to attract females, who are then coaxed to spawn. The species is characterized by a moderate level of aggression, particularly among males, which can lead to territorial disputes if not provided with adequate space and hiding spots in captivity.
Diet & feeding
In the wild, Betta falx is a carnivorous species that primarily feeds on small invertebrates and zooplankton. In captivity, they require a diet rich in high-quality protein sources, such as live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms, to maintain optimal health and coloration.
