Sahul Rainbowfish Care Guide
Melanotaenia sahulensis · Freshwater Fish

What Sahul Rainbowfish look like
The Sahul Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia sahulensis) exhibits a laterally compressed, fusiform body shape, reaching a maximum adult size of approximately 10-20 cm. Males are particularly notable for their vibrant iridescent coloration, which becomes more pronounced during breeding periods, while females tend to display a more subdued palette. This species possesses two distinct dorsal fins, with the first dorsal fin being shorter and more triangular, contributing to its streamlined appearance. The body is adorned with a series of lateral lines that facilitate hydrodynamic movement, and the presence of a well-developed adipose fin enhances stability during swimming. Defensive adaptations include rapid swimming capabilities and a tendency to inhabit densely vegetated areas, providing cover from predators.
Behavior & temperament
Sahul Rainbowfish are typically found in small to medium-sized schools, exhibiting a social hierarchy where dominant males display territorial behaviors during breeding seasons. They predominantly dwell in the mid-water column, often near the surface, where they engage in dynamic swimming patterns. Their breeding behavior is characterized by egg scattering, with females releasing eggs among aquatic vegetation, which provides a degree of protection for the developing embryos. Generally, these fish are peaceful and exhibit low aggression levels, making them suitable for community tanks, although males may display competitive behaviors during mating displays.
Diet & feeding
In the wild, Sahul Rainbowfish are omnivorous, feeding on a varied diet that includes small invertebrates, zooplankton, and plant material. In captivity, they thrive on high-quality flake food, supplemented with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia, along with vegetable matter to ensure a balanced diet.
