The Green Severum (Heros severus) exhibits a laterally compressed, oval body shape that can reach a maximum adult size of approximately 10 inches (25 cm). This species displays sexual dimorphism, with males typically being larger and more vibrantly colored, particularly during breeding seasons, while females tend to be slightly smaller and less colorful. The coloration is predominantly olive green, adorned with distinct red spots on the cheeks and throughout the body, providing a striking contrast. Notable morphological features include a rounded dorsal fin that extends from the nape to the caudal fin, and a well-developed adipose fin. The lateral line is prominent, facilitating the detection of vibrations in the water, while the dentition is characterized by pharyngeal teeth adapted for crushing food.
