Aspidoras pauciradiatus · Freshwater Fish

What Sixray Corydoras look like
The Sixray Corydoras (Aspidoras pauciradiatus) is a diminutive catfish characterized by its laterally compressed, fusiform body which typically reaches a maximum adult size of approximately 1.5 inches (3.8 cm). This species exhibits a pale body coloration with subtle dark markings that provide a degree of camouflage within its natural habitat. Notably, it possesses a reduced fin ray count, a distinctive feature that sets it apart from other members of the Corydoras genus. The body is armored with bony plates, and it features prominent barbels that aid in foraging along the substrate. The dorsal fin is relatively small and rounded, while the pectoral fins are well-developed, allowing for agile maneuvering in its benthic environment. Sexual dimorphism is subtle, with males typically being slightly smaller and more slender than females, particularly during the breeding season when females may exhibit a more pronounced abdomen due to egg development.
Behavior & temperament
The Sixray Corydoras is a social species that thrives in small groups, exhibiting a tendency to form loose schools within the water column, primarily dwelling in the benthic zone. This catfish is known for its peaceful temperament, making it an ideal community fish. Breeding behavior is characterized by egg scattering, with females laying adhesive eggs on flat surfaces or plants, which are then fertilized by males. The species displays minimal aggression, often engaging in foraging activities alongside other tank mates, and is known to exhibit a shy demeanor, seeking shelter among substrate or aquatic vegetation when startled.
Diet & feeding
In the wild, the Sixray Corydoras is an omnivore, feeding on a varied diet that includes detritus, small invertebrates, and plant matter. In captivity, it thrives on a balanced diet of high-quality sinking pellets, supplemented with occasional live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp and bloodworms to ensure optimal health and coloration.
