Slant Bar Corydoras Care Guide
Corydoras loxozonus · Freshwater Fish

What Slant Bar Corydoras look like
Corydoras loxozonus, commonly known as the Slant Bar Corydoras, is a small, armored catfish characterized by its laterally compressed body, reaching a maximum adult size of approximately 2 inches (5 cm). This species exhibits sexual dimorphism, with males typically being slightly smaller and more slender than females, particularly during the breeding season when females become more robust due to egg development. A distinctive morphological feature is the diagonal dark bar that runs from the dorsal region down to the flanks, providing a unique identification marker. The body is covered with bony plates, a characteristic of the family Callichthyidae, and it possesses well-developed barbels that aid in foraging along the substrate. The dorsal fin is moderately sized, while the pectoral fins are broad and pointed, enhancing maneuverability in its benthic habitat. Defensive adaptations include a robust armor plating that deters predation and the ability to rapidly burrow into substrate when threatened.
Behavior & temperament
The Slant Bar Corydoras is a social species that thrives in groups, exhibiting a strong tendency to form schools, which provides safety in numbers. It primarily occupies the benthic zone of its aquatic environment, foraging along the substrate for food. This species is known for its peaceful temperament, making it an ideal inhabitant for community tanks. Breeding behavior involves egg scattering, where females release eggs on flat surfaces, often in the presence of males that fertilize them shortly after. The Slant Bar Corydoras is generally non-aggressive, although it may display territorial behaviors during breeding periods.
Diet & feeding
In the wild, Corydoras loxozonus feeds on a varied diet consisting of small invertebrates, detritus, and plant matter. In captivity, it requires a balanced omnivorous diet that includes high-quality sinking pellets, frozen or live foods such as bloodworms and brine shrimp, as well as occasional vegetable matter to ensure optimal health.
Behind the name
Corydoras (from Greek 'korydallos', meaning 'helmeted') refers to the armored nature of the fish; loxozonus (from Greek 'loxos', meaning 'slant' and 'zōnos', meaning 'belt' or 'zone') describes the distinctive diagonal bar pattern on its body.
