What Spotback Corydoras look like
Corydoras blochi, commonly known as the Spotback Corydoras, is a small, laterally compressed catfish that typically reaches a maximum adult size of approximately 2 inches (5 cm). This species exhibits sexual dimorphism, with males generally being slightly smaller and more slender than females, particularly during the breeding season when females become more robust due to egg development. The Spotback Corydoras is characterized by a pale, creamy body adorned with distinctive dark spots concentrated on the dorsal region, providing effective camouflage against predators in its native habitat. The species possesses the typical armor plating of the Callichthyidae family, featuring bony scutes along the flanks, and has well-developed barbels that aid in foraging along the substrate. Notably, this species lacks an adipose fin, which is common in many other catfish, and instead has a well-defined caudal fin that aids in agile swimming. Its lateral line system is fully developed, allowing it to detect vibrations in the water, an essential adaptation for a benthic lifestyle.
Behavior & temperament
The Spotback Corydoras is a social fish that thrives in groups, exhibiting a strong tendency to form schools, particularly in the presence of potential threats. It is primarily a benthic dweller, often found foraging along the substrate in search of food. This species displays a peaceful temperament, making it suitable for community tanks, although it may exhibit slight territorial behavior during breeding. Breeding occurs through egg scattering, with females laying adhesive eggs on surfaces such as plants or tank decor, which are then fertilized by males. The Spotback Corydoras is generally non-aggressive and can coexist harmoniously with other small, peaceful fish species.
Diet & feeding
In the wild, the Spotback Corydoras is an omnivore, feeding on a varied diet that includes detritus, small invertebrates, and plant matter. In captivity, it requires a balanced diet that includes high-quality sinking pellets, frozen or live foods such as bloodworms and brine shrimp, and occasional vegetable matter to ensure optimal health.
Behind the name
Corydoras (from Greek 'korydallos', meaning 'helmeted') refers to the armored nature of these catfish; blochi is named in honor of the German naturalist Marcus Bloch.
