What Strawberry Dwarf Cichlid look like
The Strawberry Dwarf Cichlid (Apistogramma eremnopyge) exhibits a compact, laterally compressed body that typically reaches a maximum adult size of 2-3 inches (5-7.5 cm). Males are particularly distinguished by their vibrant strawberry-red to pink body coloration, accentuated with striking blue iridescent markings and a prominent dark lateral stripe, which serves as a key identifying feature. Sexual dimorphism is evident, with males displaying more intense coloration and larger dorsal and anal fins compared to the more subdued hues of females. The species possesses a small, rounded head with a terminal mouth adapted for feeding on small invertebrates and plant matter. Defensive adaptations include a well-developed dorsal fin that can be raised to appear larger to potential threats, and the presence of an adipose fin that aids in maneuverability within its natural habitat.
Behavior & temperament
The Strawberry Dwarf Cichlid is primarily a benthic dweller, often found in the lower strata of slow-moving waters in its native South American habitats. This species exhibits a semi-social behavior, with males establishing territories during breeding periods, while females may form loose associations with males for spawning. They are not obligate schoolers and can be observed displaying solitary behaviors, especially outside of breeding seasons. Breeding involves the female laying eggs in a hidden location, often within crevices or under leaf litter, making them egg scatterers. Their temperament can be described as moderately aggressive, particularly during the breeding season, when males may exhibit territorial displays to ward off intruders.
Diet & feeding
In the wild, the Strawberry Dwarf Cichlid primarily consumes small invertebrates, crustaceans, and plant matter, reflecting its omnivorous diet. In captivity, it thrives on a varied diet that includes high-quality flake foods, frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia, and plant-based supplements to ensure optimal health.
