Geophagus altifrons · Freshwater Fish

What Altifron Eartheater look like
Geophagus altifrons, commonly known as the Altifron Eartheater, exhibits a medium to large size, typically reaching lengths of 8 to 10 inches (20 to 25 cm) at maturity. The species is characterized by a tall, laterally compressed body that is olive-tan in color, adorned with striking iridescent blue-green spots scattered across its scales. A prominent dark spot is located centrally on the body, enhancing its visual appeal. Sexual dimorphism is subtle; males tend to be slightly larger and may exhibit more vibrant coloration during breeding displays. Defensive adaptations include a robust body and the ability to quickly burrow into substrate, utilizing its mouth to sift through sand and gravel, which also aids in foraging. Unique morphological features include a well-developed lateral line system, which is crucial for detecting vibrations in the water, and a notable absence of an adipose fin, which is common in many cichlid species. The dentition is specialized for its omnivorous diet, featuring pharyngeal teeth adapted for crushing and grinding food items.
Behavior & temperament
In terms of behavior, Geophagus altifrons is primarily a benthic feeder, often seen sifting through substrate in search of food. This species is generally social and can be found in small groups, although it does not form strict schools. It exhibits a hierarchical social structure, with dominant individuals displaying more vibrant colors and engaging in territorial displays. During breeding, the Altifron Eartheater engages in substrate spawning, where eggs are laid on flat surfaces and guarded by both parents. The species is known for its relatively peaceful temperament, though it can exhibit territorial aggression, particularly during breeding periods or when establishing dominance within a group.
Diet & feeding
In the wild, Geophagus altifrons is an omnivore, primarily feeding on small invertebrates, detritus, and plant matter found within the substrate. In captivity, it requires a varied diet that includes high-quality pellets, frozen or live foods such as bloodworms and brine shrimp, as well as vegetable matter to ensure optimal health.
