Aru Rainbowfish Care Guide
Melanotaenia picta · Freshwater Fish

What Aru Rainbowfish look like
Melanotaenia picta, commonly known as the Aru Rainbowfish, exhibits a medium-sized, laterally compressed body that typically reaches a maximum adult size of 3-4 inches. Males are particularly striking, displaying vivid blue-green coloration on the upper body that transitions to a warm gold-orange hue on the lower body, a characteristic sexual dimorphism that enhances their visual appeal during mating displays. The species possesses two dorsal fins, a feature typical of the Melanotaeniidae family, and a deep, fusiform body shape that aids in agile swimming. The presence of a lateral line system is evident, providing sensory input to navigate their environment. Defensive adaptations include their vibrant coloration, which can serve as a warning to potential predators, and their ability to swiftly maneuver through their habitat to evade threats.
Behavior & temperament
Aru Rainbowfish are typically found in small to medium-sized schools, demonstrating a social hierarchy where dominant males establish territories within the group. They inhabit the pelagic zone of their native freshwater environments, often dwelling in open waters rather than near the substrate. During breeding, they exhibit egg-scattering behavior, where females release eggs into the water column to be fertilized by males, promoting genetic diversity. Their temperament is generally peaceful, making them suitable for community tanks, although males can display territorial aggression during breeding seasons.
Diet & feeding
In the wild, Aru Rainbowfish are omnivorous, feeding on a varied diet that includes small invertebrates, zooplankton, and plant matter. In captivity, they thrive on a balanced diet of high-quality flake food, supplemented with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia to ensure optimal health and coloration.
