What Murray River Rainbowfish look like
The Murray River Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia fluviatilis) exhibits a laterally compressed, fusiform body shape, typically reaching a maximum adult size of 10-20 cm (4-8 inches). Males are distinguished by their vibrant iridescent green to blue-green upper body coloration, transitioning to a golden lower body, while females tend to be less colorful, displaying a more subdued palette. Sexual dimorphism is evident, with males showcasing more intense coloration and larger dorsal fins, which are bifurcated into two distinct dorsal fins. The species possesses a well-defined lateral line, which aids in hydrodynamic sensing, and its dentition is adapted for an omnivorous diet, featuring small, conical teeth suitable for grazing on algae and small invertebrates. Defensive adaptations include a streamlined body that allows for quick evasive maneuvers in the water column.
Behavior & temperament
Murray River Rainbowfish are typically found in schools, exhibiting a social hierarchy where dominant males establish territories within the group. They are primarily pelagic, inhabiting the mid to upper water column in their natural habitats, which consist of rivers and streams in the Murray-Darling system of Australia. Breeding behavior involves egg scattering, where females release eggs into the substrate, and males fertilize them externally. The species is generally peaceful but can exhibit territorial aggression during breeding periods, particularly among males vying for dominance and mating opportunities.
Diet & feeding
In the wild, the Murray River Rainbowfish is an omnivore, feeding on a varied diet that includes algae, small invertebrates, and detritus. In captivity, they thrive on a balanced diet consisting of high-quality flake food, live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia, and vegetable matter to ensure optimal health and coloration.
