What Aurora Cichlid look like
The Aurora Cichlid (Maylandia aurora) exhibits a robust, laterally compressed body typical of mbuna cichlids, reaching a maximum adult size of approximately 5-6 inches. Males are characterized by their striking vivid yellow-orange coloration, adorned with iridescent blue-purple overtones particularly prominent on the head and dorsal fin, while females display a more subdued, plain coloration. This sexual dimorphism is evident in both size and coloration, with males generally being larger and more vibrantly colored. The species possesses a well-developed set of pharyngeal teeth adapted for grazing on algae and detritus, indicative of its herbivorous tendencies. Additionally, the presence of an adipose fin and a pronounced lateral line aids in navigation and social interactions within rocky habitats, where they are commonly found.
Behavior & temperament
Aurora Cichlids are primarily rock-dwelling fish, exhibiting a benthic lifestyle within their natural habitat. They are known to be social creatures, often forming loose aggregations but can display territorial behavior, especially males during breeding seasons. Their breeding behavior involves egg scattering, where females lay eggs in crevices among rocks, which are then fertilized by males. This species is generally considered semi-aggressive, with a hierarchical social structure where dominant individuals assert their presence through displays of color and fin posturing, particularly during mating rituals.

In the wild, Aurora Cichlids primarily consume algae, detritus, and small invertebrates, reflecting their omnivorous diet.
