Kenyi Cichlid Care Guide
Maylandia lombardoi · Freshwater Fish

What Kenyi Cichlid look like
The Kenyi Cichlid (Maylandia lombardoi) exhibits a laterally compressed, fusiform body shape, reaching a maximum adult size of approximately 10-25 cm. Sexual dimorphism is pronounced, with males displaying a vibrant, solid gold or yellow coloration, while females retain a more subdued light blue hue, often with faint vertical banding that may be barely perceptible. This species features a robust jaw structure with pronounced dentition adapted for an omnivorous diet, including both algae and small invertebrates. The dorsal fin is elongated and pointed, contributing to its streamlined appearance, while the anal fin is similarly elongated, enhancing maneuverability. Defensive adaptations include aggressive territorial behavior, which is common among Mbuna cichlids, and the presence of a well-developed lateral line system that aids in detecting vibrations in the water column.
Behavior & temperament
The Kenyi Cichlid is known for its aggressive and territorial behavior, particularly in males, which often establish dominance hierarchies within their social structure. They are primarily benthic dwellers, frequenting rocky substrates in the shallow waters of Lake Malawi. This species is not an obligate schooler; instead, it exhibits a more solitary or loosely grouped lifestyle, with males often defending specific territories. Breeding behavior involves egg scattering, where females lay eggs in a substrate, and males engage in courtship displays to attract females. The temperament of the Kenyi Cichlid can be described as highly aggressive, especially during breeding periods, making it essential to provide ample space and hiding spots in a community tank.
Diet & feeding
In the wild, the Kenyi Cichlid is an omnivore, primarily feeding on algae, small invertebrates, and detritus. In captivity, it requires a varied diet that includes high-quality pellets, spirulina flakes, and occasional live or frozen foods to ensure optimal health and coloration.
