Parosphromenus bintan · Freshwater Fish

What Bintan Licorice Gourami look like
The Bintan Licorice Gourami (Parosphromenus bintan) is a diminutive labyrinth fish, reaching a maximum adult size of approximately 1.5 inches (3.8 cm). Its body is laterally compressed and displays a dark brown coloration, which serves as a cryptic adaptation in its natural blackwater habitat. Males exhibit striking sexual dimorphism, showcasing iridescent blue-green and red banding on their fins during courtship displays, while females are generally more subdued in coloration. The species possesses a well-developed labyrinth organ, allowing it to extract oxygen from the air, and features a small dorsal fin that is elongated and continuous with the caudal fin, enhancing its maneuverability in densely vegetated environments. Defensive adaptations include its ability to blend into the substrate and vegetation, as well as a tendency to remain hidden among leaf litter and roots.
Behavior & temperament
The Bintan Licorice Gourami is typically found in small groups, exhibiting a social hierarchy where males display territorial behaviors during breeding seasons. They inhabit the lower strata of the water column, primarily dwelling in the benthic and midwater zones of their blackwater habitats. Breeding behavior is characterized by egg scattering, where females release eggs among dense vegetation, and males guard the territory. This species is generally peaceful but can exhibit aggression during breeding, particularly among males vying for dominance. Their temperament is shy, making them more suitable for tranquil community tanks.
Diet & feeding
In the wild, the Bintan Licorice Gourami primarily feeds on small invertebrates and zooplankton, necessitating a protein-rich diet. In captivity, they require a varied diet consisting of high-quality micro-pellets, live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia, to meet their carnivorous dietary needs.
