What Black Tiger Dario look like
Dario hysginon, commonly known as the Black Tiger Dario, exhibits a distinctive nano fish shape characterized by a deep-bodied and laterally compressed form. Adults can reach a maximum size of approximately 5 to 15 centimeters. The species displays sexual dimorphism, with males typically exhibiting more vibrant coloration and pronounced vertical black stripes compared to the more subdued hues of females. A notable defensive adaptation includes its ability to blend into the substrate due to its dark red and black coloration, which serves as camouflage against predators. Unique morphological features include a well-developed lateral line system, which aids in detecting water movements, and a small, rounded dorsal fin that contributes to its agile swimming capabilities. The dentition is adapted for micropredation, featuring small, sharp teeth suited for capturing tiny invertebrates.
Behavior & temperament
The Black Tiger Dario is primarily a solitary and territorial species, often found dwelling in the benthic zone of slow-moving streams and rivers in Myanmar. It exhibits a preference for densely vegetated habitats where it can hide among aquatic plants. This species is not an obligate schooler, but it may display social interactions during breeding periods. Breeding behavior involves egg scattering, with females laying eggs in hidden locations among plants, where they are left to develop independently. Dario hysginon is known for its relatively calm temperament, although males can display aggression towards one another during territorial disputes, particularly in confined spaces.
Diet & feeding
In the wild, the Black Tiger Dario primarily feeds on small invertebrates, including insect larvae and zooplankton. In captivity, it requires a diet rich in live or frozen micropredator foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and finely crushed flakes or pellets designed for small carnivorous fish.
