Blue Bolt Shrimp Care Guide
Caridina cantonensis var. Blue Bolt · Freshwater Invert

What Blue Bolt Shrimp look like
Caridina cantonensis var. Blue Bolt exhibits a strikingly vivid electric blue body, reaching a maximum adult size of approximately 1 inch (2.5 cm). This small shrimp displays a solid deep blue coloration that can range from sky blue to deep cobalt, with higher-grade individuals showcasing a thick opaque white head cap. The legs and antennae are also tinted blue, contributing to its overall aesthetic appeal. The shrimp's body is laterally compressed, allowing for agile movement through its aquatic environment. Notably, it possesses a well-defined rostrum and a pair of prominent compound eyes, which enhance its sensory capabilities. Defensive adaptations include its small size and ability to blend into the substrate, as well as rapid swimming to evade predators.
Behavior & temperament
The Blue Bolt Shrimp is primarily a solitary or loosely social species, often found dwelling in the benthic zone of freshwater environments. It exhibits a non-aggressive temperament, making it suitable for community tanks with similarly sized tank mates. Breeding behavior involves egg scattering, with females carrying fertilized eggs under their pleopods until they hatch into miniature versions of adults. This species tends to inhabit the lower strata of the water column, foraging for food among the substrate and vegetation. Their behavior is characterized by a degree of curiosity and exploration, often seen grazing on biofilm and detritus.
Diet & feeding
In the wild, the Blue Bolt Shrimp is an omnivore, feeding on biofilm, algae, and organic detritus. In captivity, it requires a varied diet that includes high-quality shrimp pellets, blanched vegetables, and occasional protein sources such as daphnia or brine shrimp to maintain optimal health.
