Bluefin Killifish Care Guide
Lucania goodei · Freshwater Fish

What Bluefin Killifish look like
Lucania goodei, commonly known as the Bluefin Killifish, exhibits a small, fusiform body that typically reaches a maximum adult size of 2 inches (5 cm). The species displays pronounced sexual dimorphism; males are characterized by their striking iridescent blue coloration on the anal and dorsal fins, which contrasts with the more subdued olive-brown coloration of females. This vivid coloration serves as a key diagnostic feature for identification. The species possesses a streamlined shape, facilitating agile movements in its aquatic environment. Notable morphological adaptations include a well-defined lateral line system, which aids in detecting vibrations in the water, and a small, terminal mouth equipped with fine, conical teeth adapted for grasping small invertebrates and plant matter. The dorsal fin is positioned towards the rear of the body, enhancing maneuverability, while the presence of an adipose fin contributes to stability during swimming.
Behavior & temperament
The Bluefin Killifish is primarily a social species, often found in small schools, which provides safety in numbers against potential predators. It typically inhabits shallow, vegetated areas of freshwater bodies, dwelling in the upper water column, where it forages among aquatic plants. Breeding behavior is characterized by egg scattering, where females release eggs among dense vegetation, providing cover for the developing embryos. This species exhibits a generally peaceful temperament, although males can display territorial behavior during the breeding season, particularly when competing for mates. Their social structure is relatively egalitarian, with no strict hierarchy observed within groups.
Diet & feeding
In the wild, the Bluefin Killifish is an omnivore, feeding on a varied diet that includes small invertebrates, zooplankton, and plant matter. In captivity, it thrives on a diet consisting of high-quality flake food, frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia, and finely chopped vegetables to ensure a balanced nutritional intake.
