Broad Stripe Rasbora Care Guide
Rasbora dandia · Freshwater Fish

What Broad Stripe Rasbora look like
The Broad Stripe Rasbora (Rasbora dandia) exhibits a slender, fusiform body that typically reaches a maximum adult size of approximately 3 inches (7.5 cm). This species is characterized by a prominent, broad, dark horizontal stripe that runs along the midline, which is significantly wider than that of many other rasbora species, providing a distinctive identification feature. The coloration above and below the stripe is a reflective silver, enhancing its visual appeal. Sexual dimorphism is subtle, with males generally being slightly smaller and more vibrantly colored than females, particularly during breeding periods. Defensive adaptations include a laterally compressed body that allows for agile movements to evade predators. The species possesses a well-developed lateral line system, which aids in detecting water movements, and features a small adipose fin, contributing to its streamlined morphology.
Behavior & temperament
Broad Stripe Rasboras are typically found in small, loose schools, exhibiting a social structure that favors group cohesion, although they can also be observed solitary in less dense populations. They predominantly inhabit the mid to upper water column in their natural environments, often found in slow-moving streams and shallow ponds. Breeding behavior is characterized by egg scattering, where females release eggs over vegetation or substrate, allowing for external fertilization by males. The species is generally peaceful and exhibits low aggression levels, making it suitable for community tanks with other non-aggressive fish.
Diet & feeding
In the wild, the Broad Stripe Rasbora is an omnivore, feeding on a varied diet that includes small invertebrates, algae, and plant matter. In captivity, they thrive on a balanced diet consisting of high-quality flake food, supplemented with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia to ensure optimal health and coloration.
