Denison Barb Care Guide
Sahyadria denisonii · Freshwater Fish

What Denison Barb look like
The Denison Barb (Sahyadria denisonii) exhibits a fusiform body shape that is laterally compressed, typically reaching a maximum adult size of 5 to 6 inches (12 to 15 cm). This species is characterized by its striking coloration, featuring a silvery body adorned with vibrant red or orange horizontal stripes that run along the length of the body, particularly prominent in mature individuals. Sexual dimorphism is subtle; males tend to display more vivid coloration and may exhibit slightly more pronounced fin extensions during the breeding season. The dorsal fin is notably elongated and pointed, while the anal fin is shorter and rounded. Defensive adaptations include a streamlined body that allows for rapid escape from predators, and the presence of a lateral line system that aids in detecting water movements. The mouth is equipped with small, pharyngeal teeth, adapted for grazing on algae and detritus, further emphasizing its omnivorous diet.
Behavior & temperament
Denison Barbs are known for their social and active behavior, often found in groups, making them obligate schoolers. They typically inhabit the mid to upper water column, where they exhibit a dynamic swimming style. In terms of social hierarchy, they display a loose structure with no strict dominance, allowing for a peaceful coexistence among conspecifics. Breeding behavior involves egg scattering, where females release eggs into the water column, and males fertilize them externally. This species is generally peaceful but can exhibit mild territoriality during breeding periods, particularly among males vying for the attention of females.
Diet & feeding
In the wild, Denison Barbs are omnivorous, feeding on a varied diet that includes algae, small invertebrates, and plant matter. In captivity, they thrive on a balanced diet of high-quality flake food, supplemented with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia, as well as vegetable matter like spirulina and blanched greens.
