Dove Snail Care Guide
Euplica scripta · Saltwater Snail

What Dove Snail look like
Euplica scripta, commonly known as the Dove Snail, exhibits a distinctive, elongated, and spirally coiled shell that can reach a maximum adult size of approximately 3 cm in diameter. The shell is characterized by its smooth, glossy surface and a pale, creamy coloration with subtle brown or reddish spiral bands, which provide effective camouflage against predators. The aperture of the shell is oval and slightly elongated, allowing for the extension of the soft body of the snail. Sexual dimorphism is not pronounced in this species, as both sexes exhibit similar shell morphology. Defensive adaptations include the ability to retract fully into the shell, which is reinforced by a thickened lip at the aperture, providing additional protection against predation. Unique morphological features include a well-defined operculum that seals the shell when the snail is retracted, and a radula equipped with specialized teeth for grazing on algae and detritus.
Behavior & temperament
Euplica scripta is primarily a solitary and nocturnal invertebrate, exhibiting a slow and deliberate movement pattern. During the day, they tend to remain hidden under rocks or within crevices, emerging at night to graze on algae and biofilm. Breeding behavior involves a courtship display where individuals may engage in tactile interactions before copulation, which can occur multiple times throughout the breeding season. The species is generally non-aggressive, displaying a peaceful temperament towards other invertebrates and fish, making it a suitable addition to community aquariums. Their movement is characterized by a gliding motion facilitated by a muscular foot, which allows for efficient locomotion across various substrates.
Diet & feeding
Euplica scripta is primarily herbivorous, feeding on a diet of algae, detritus, and biofilm in its natural habitat. In captivity, it thrives on a varied diet that includes blanched vegetables, algae wafers, and specialized marine snail food.
Behind the name
The genus name 'Euplica' is derived from the Greek word 'eu' meaning 'well' and 'plicare' meaning 'to fold', referring to the shell's coiled structure. The species name 'scripta' comes from the Latin word 'scriptus', meaning 'written', likely referring to the shell's patterned appearance.
