Clown Killifish Care Guide
Epiplatys annulatus · Freshwater Fish

What Clown Killifish look like
The Clown Killifish (Epiplatys annulatus) exhibits a laterally compressed, fusiform body shape, reaching a maximum adult size of approximately 5 to 15 cm. This species displays sexual dimorphism, with males typically possessing more vibrant coloration and elongated fins compared to the more subdued hues of females. Notable morphological features include a prominent lateral line system, which aids in detecting vibrations in the water, and a distinctive pattern of bright orange and blue stripes that run along the body. The dorsal fin is elongated and sail-like, contributing to its agile swimming capabilities, while the anal fin is also elongated, providing stability during movement. Defensive adaptations include rapid bursts of speed and the ability to blend into aquatic vegetation, enhancing their survival in the wild.
Behavior & temperament
Clown Killifish are generally found in small, loose groups, exhibiting a social hierarchy where males display territorial behaviors, particularly during breeding seasons. They inhabit the upper to mid-water column, often dwelling near the surface of slow-moving waters such as swamps and marshes. Breeding behavior is characterized by egg scattering, where females release eggs among dense vegetation, providing cover for the developing embryos. Their temperament is generally peaceful, although males can exhibit aggressive displays towards one another during mating rituals, making them suitable for community tanks with similarly sized, non-aggressive species.
Diet & feeding
In the wild, Clown Killifish are omnivorous, feeding on small invertebrates, insects, and plant matter. In captivity, they thrive on a varied diet that includes high-quality flake food, frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia, along with occasional vegetable matter to ensure balanced nutrition.
