Leopard Danio Care Guide
Danio rerio (var) · Freshwater Fish

What Leopard Danio look like
The Leopard Danio (Danio rerio var) exhibits a strikingly unique morphology characterized by its gold to silver body, which is densely covered in fine blue to black leopard-like spots, distinguishing it from the more commonly recognized zebra variant. This species can reach a maximum adult size of approximately 5 cm (2 inches), although individuals may vary in size based on environmental conditions. Sexual dimorphism is subtle; males tend to be slightly smaller and more slender than females, particularly during the breeding season when females exhibit a more rounded abdomen due to egg retention. Defensive adaptations include a streamlined, fusiform body shape that allows for rapid escape from predators. Notably, the Leopard Danio possesses a lateral line system that aids in detecting water movements, and its finnage includes a well-developed dorsal fin and a forked caudal fin, which enhance its agility in the water column.
Behavior & temperament
Leopard Danios are social fish that thrive in groups, exhibiting a schooling behavior that is essential for their well-being. They are primarily pelagic, dwelling in the upper to mid-water column, where they engage in active swimming and foraging. Their breeding behavior is characterized as egg scatterers, where females release eggs in open water, allowing for external fertilization by males. These fish are generally peaceful and exhibit low aggression levels, making them suitable for community tanks. However, they can display territorial behavior during breeding, particularly among males competing for the attention of females.
Diet & feeding
In the wild, Leopard Danios are omnivorous, feeding on a varied diet that includes small invertebrates, zooplankton, and plant matter. In captivity, they require a balanced diet consisting of high-quality flake food, supplemented with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia to ensure optimal health and coloration.
